Steel windows can be suitable for coastal areas, but they require careful consideration and specific treatments to withstand the harsh marine environment. Here are the key points to consider:

  1. Corrosion resistance: Standard steel is prone to rust and corrosion in coastal areas due to high humidity and salt in the air. However, stainless steel, particularly Grade 316 (marine grade), offers excellent corrosion resistance and is often recommended for coastal applications.
  2. Protective treatments: If using standard steel windows, they must be treated appropriately with corrosion-resistant coatings, galvanisation, or other protective measures to enhance their durability in coastal environments
  3. Maintenance: Steel windows in coastal areas require regular maintenance, including cleaning to remove salt deposits and contaminants to prevent corrosion and maintain their appearance.
  4. Alternatives: While steel can be used, alternatives like aluminium or stainless steel are often preferred for coastal applications due to their inherent corrosion resistance.

While steel windows can be used in coastal areas with proper treatments and maintenance, marine-grade stainless steel (Grade 316) or aluminium alternatives are often recommended for superior corrosion resistance in these challenging environments.

Brighton Steel Windows & Doors Projects and Case Studies

Art Deco Steel Bay Windows

This property had been altered dramatically over its lifetime. The building had been neglected, the external render was poor and in need of decoration, the roof needed renewing and the soft wood windows were rotten.

The new homeowner wanted to bring the original ‘Art Deco’ features back to the property and so commissioned us to supply and install new double glazed steel windows that were in keeping with the original appearance.  This included us supplying curved on plan ‘suntrap’ bay windows that are also double glazed.  It took the homeowners some time to complete this project and at some expense but the final appearance was worth it.
